A Quick Guide to the Main Components of an Energy Efficient Window

Glass gains energy efficiency because of the addition of certain components. So what are these components? What are the dimensions that go into the design of an energy efficiency window? Glass is one of the dimensions. The other two are the frame and spacer.

Window Glass:

Most energy efficient windows consist of dual panes, which are separated by a column of air or gas. This arrangement insulates better compared to single pane glass.

Low emissivity coating also leads to energy efficiency by blocking infrared light. This coating is also responsible for protecting the interior furnishings of your home from UV rays.

Window Frame:

The material used to make the replacement windows is also an important consideration. Vinyl is a very energy efficient material and therefore it is widely used to make replacement windows. Installation of vinyl windows can improve insulation by a substantial level. But ensure that the windows you choose have been engineered to perform. For instance, chambers inside the vinyl frame can reduce noise, increase insulation value and enhance strength.

Window Spacer:

The spacer is responsible for maintaining the correct distance between the glass panes. This keeps the air flow at an optimal level. The spacer performs an important role because the efficiency of the insulating glass is affected by the air flow between the panes also. Too little or too much air flow and insulation will be affected. Thus, the material used to make the spacer and its design also affect the contraction and expansion of the air or gas inside the column.
