Window Styles and Efficiency: How to Choose When Retrofitting Windows

If you have decided to retrofit your windows, then vinyl replacement windows are the best choice. But which window style should you choose?

There are currently over 9 window styles to choose from. Some of the popular window styles are single hung, double hung, picture, and casement windows. Depending on the style of your existing windows, replacement windows are also available in horizontal slider, arch/radius, awning, garden or bay/bow styles. Here are a few tips to help you decide between the different styles.

When it comes to energy efficiency, retrofit windows also differ among themselves. For instance, fixed windows are more energy efficient than open windows for the simple reason that there is no air leakage in the former. Fixed windows also have a tighter fit than open windows. But if you are looking for fire safety and summer ventilation, you should go for open windows. New replacement open windows are still far more energy efficient than the older windows that you currently have on your home.

Fixed Vs Operable Windows

Awning and casement windows come with compression seals, which provide better closure and sealing compared to horizontal or vertical sliders, that have sliding seals.

When you are on hunt for replacement windows, check the weather stripping system on the replacement windows you choose carefully and ask yourself these questions. Is it flexible? Can you replace it later? How many layers or weather stripping are there?

Air Leakage Ratings

Quality windows come with ratings for wind resistance, water penetration, and air leakage. When you are comparing windows, ask for windows that have a A3 rating. This is the highest rating available for air leakage. If you are trying to save money, consider installing a combination of fixed replacement windows and open replacement windows, subject to fire and safety considerations, of course.
